Creating Consistency Across Distance: A Portrait Series on the Road
A while back, I had the pleasure of photographing Judith Scaglione, APNP, of the Miami Kidney Group in South Miami, and Joshua Cochran, RN and clinical educator, in Sarasota, Florida, for Fresenius Healthcare.
These portraits were part of a larger national series highlighting healthcare providers and Fresenius team members from across the country. The goal wasn’t just to create strong individual portraits, but to ensure that every image—regardless of location, subject, or circumstance—felt cohesive and unified as part of a single visual narrative.
That meant my assistant and I were tasked with matching an already-established look: consistent lighting, framing, tone, and overall feel. When you’re working in different cities with different spaces, that’s where preparation and experience really matter.
Judith and Joshua each brought their own presence and professionalism to the camera, and my role was to honor that individuality while staying true to the visual language of the series as a whole.

Each location presents its own challenges—available light, room size, time constraints—but the objective stays the same. We built each setup intentionally, recreating the same lighting ratios and camera perspective so that these portraits could live seamlessly alongside others photographed hundreds or even thousands of miles away.
I love these types of projects and the balance they require. On one hand, there’s precision and structure—technical consistency, repeatable systems, attention to detail. On the other hand, there’s the human element: making each subject feel comfortable, seen, and authentically represented within those constraints.
This kind of work is a reminder that strong portraiture isn’t just about a single image—it’s about how images relate to one another, how they function in context, and how consistency can elevate storytelling across an entire brand.
